Benefit to your business
Today’s workplace is governed by federal and state employment laws that affect how employers manage employees, workplace conduct, company resources, and disciplinary actions.
Clear, consistently enforced company policies help establish expectations for both employers and employees. They can reduce misunderstandings, support fair decision-making, improve accountability, and help protect the organization when workplace disputes arise.
What topics should your policies include?
Every organization has different requirements, but company policies commonly address:
Acceptable computer and technology use
Company property and resources
Cybersecurity and information security
Email and internet use
Financial procedures
Hiring, discipline, and termination
Personal and professional conduct
Passwords and access control
Protection of confidential information
Remote work and mobile devices
Social media use
Why Written Company Policies Matter
Written policies provide employees with clear rules and explain the consequences of failing to follow them. They also help managers apply workplace standards consistently.
Employment policies may become important during unemployment claims, disciplinary disputes, or other proceedings before the Texas Workforce Commission. However, the existence of a written policy does not automatically determine the outcome of a claim. The agency may also consider whether the employee received the policy, understood the expectations, violated the policy, and was treated consistently with other employees.
Employees should receive the current company policies when they are hired and whenever substantial revisions are made. A signed acknowledgment should be retained in the employee’s personnel file confirming that the employee received the policies, had an opportunity to ask questions, and understands their responsibility to follow them.
